Hertha unleashes in second half to win 3:1
Heinz Müller was beat thrice as Hertha scored three goals in the second half to beat FSV Mainz 05. The final score read 3:1 and the three points will remain in Berlin.
After the cup defeat during the week, the home win was important for the fan support. The fans had hoped for a final in the cup with their home team, but Hertha coach Jos Luhukay did not want to talk about the cup with journalists after the match. “That is not our priority and it is not our focus now”, said Luhukay. The fans have the right to dream of a final in their home stadium. But he would have to remain a realist, the coach said: “In the end, it is all about not being relegated to the second division.”
Thus, Luhukay did not want to discuss the first half against Mainz for very long. Instead, he complimented his teams’ morale, having “unleashed” in the second half and played aggressively and dynamic soccer to turn the tables from a 0:1 deficit into a 3:1 win. Even though Hertha BSC had displayed strength in home matches, winning all but one this season, Luhukay emphasized that winning at home is not a matter of course.
