On 17th of January 2014, the President of the Berlin Sports Federation, Klaus Boeger, received the “Golden Football” – as part of the BFV – New Year’s reception – at the Olympiastadion Berlin. Since 1992, individuals or institutions are awarded the “Golden Football” for outstanding contributions to football. Klaus Boeger expressed his delight about the decision: “I am honored to receive the award and will gladly put it on display at the Landessportbund”. Boeger was chosen as the recipient of this years’ award as a result of his social and sustainable commitment to sports in Germany’s capital city.
“Klaus Boeger has taken on a leading role within society for the development of sports in Berlin for many years. His passion for the politics of sports and his commitment have benefited sports in Berlin ever since he was a Senator in Berlin. During his work at the Berlin Sports Federation, he has consistently and significantly advocated the importance and interests of the sports community in Berlin when it came to dealing with politics and politicians. The Berlin Football Association is paying tribute to Klaus Boeger’s immense commitment to Berlin sports by awarding him this years’ “Golden Football”,” said Bernd Schultz, president of the Berlin Football Association said about the ceremony.
Klaus Boeger was born on September 8, 1945 in Lauterbach, Hesse. In 1968 he moved to Berlin, where he studied political science and constitutional law at the Free University of Berlin, earning his degree in 1972. From 1994 to 1999 Boeger served as chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives. From 1999 until 2006, Boeger served as Senator for Education, Youth and Sports. He remained a member of the Berlin House of Representatives until 2006. Since 2009, Klaus Boeger is the President of the Berlin Sports Federation.
Last year, the Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) was honored with the “Golden Football“. There have been 22 recipients of the award to date.
