Tagesspiegel discussion at the bell tower
The Tagesspiegel discussions of the anniversary series “75 years Olympiastadion Berlin – 75 years Olympic Games Berlin” took place for the third time this past thursday. A panel of experts disussed the topic “Olympics ´36 – The other side of the medals” that was moderated by Friedhard Teuffel.
Gerd Steins (chief of the Forum für Sportgeschichte), Carl-Jürgen Diem (book author and son of Carl Diem, the general secretary of the 1936 Olympic Games) and Volker Kluge (journalist and expert in all things Olympic) discussed the instrumentalisation of the games as a tool of power to the Adolf Hitler and Nazi regime.
80 interested spectators came to hear the talk and had the chance to ask questions of the panel afterwards.
In the “Tagesspiegel discussions” series, there are two more events coming up. On Thursday, October 20, the Kuppelsaal at the Olympiapark Berlin will host the discussion about “Hitler´s stadium”. Topic is how much history is good for the Olympiastadion Berlin and how the history should be handled.
On November 10, the final discussion of the five-part-series will take place at the Tagesspiegel headquarters. The title of the discussion will be “Lenis Olympics – The first media games”
What was and still is today a political orchestration during the Games of 1936 and what was “regular PR” that was done in Games after 1936 as well? Was everything bad about these Olympics? Or did some things make it to present times rightuflly, like the torch relay?
The events start at 7 p.m. Further information like directions and registration can be found in the Tagesspiegel newspapers and this website startin on Thursday, October 13.
